Abstract

This review examines Abdelmalek Hibaoui’s Annemarie Schimmel: A Bridge Between Islam and the West (2022), highlighting its contribution to intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding between the Islamic world and the West. Rather than emphasizing conflict or civilizational confrontation, the book explores the possibilities of intellectual exchange and constructive engagement across cultures. It focuses on the life and scholarly legacy of the distinguished German orientalist Annemarie Schimmel (1922–2003), whose career spanned more than six decades of research, translation, writing, teaching, and academic supervision. Schimmel devoted her scholarship to the study of Islam, Islamic spirituality, and Sufism, becoming one of the most respected Western scholars in the field. The book also examines her role as an honorary member of the Advisory Council of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, where she contributed to promoting Islamic knowledge within Western societies. Through Schimmel’s intellectual legacy, Hibaoui presents a compelling model of cultural mediation and constructive dialogue between Islam and the West.
