تقدم هذه الترجمة دراسة الأنثروبولوجي ألكسندر هورستمان، الملاجئ العلمانية والدينية: واجهات الحكم الذاتي والعمل الإنساني للاجئين والمهاجرين 'الكارين' في المناطق الحدودية بين التايلاند وبورما. وهي دراسة تنظر في الأصل إلى عمل المنظمات الإنسانية، العلمانية والدينية، مع شبكات الدعم الاجتماعي ودورها في بقاء وحماية وتجنيب قرويي منطقة 'الكارين' الصراع في شرق بورما المدمر، وهو منظور نقدي لهؤلاء اللاجئين، يتتبع فيه صاحب الدراسة اهتمامه القديم بالسلطة والهيمنة وفنون مقاومة الدولة القمعية. من خلال تحليل هياكل بعثات حقوق الإنسان الدينية والعلمانية في المناطق الحدودية، وبالخصوص هياكل السلطة التي قد تظل إلى حد كبير غير مرئية، كونها تعمل خارج نطاق رقابة الدولة. كما يناقش التمييز الدقيق بين العلماني والديني، حيث يتداخل الحقلين في إطار المساعدات الإنسانية.
