An Introduction to the Quran by the Orientalist Gustav Weil Translation and Critical Review

Abstract

This study translates and critically examines “An Introduction to the Quran,” an article by German Orientalist Gustav Weil, published in English in 1895, from an internal Islamic perspective. It outlines the article’s historical and intellectual context and traces its transmission from German to English and Arabic. The analysis addresses three main issues: the medical and psychological interpretation of prophetic revelation and miracles, the rejection of Muhammad’s prophethood, and the portrayal of relations between the Prophet and Jewish groups in Medina. It highlights the importance of consulting the Qur’an, hadith, and works of prophetic biography and history, while critically examining chains of transmission, textual content, and historical contexts. Rather than rejecting Orientalist scholarship wholesale, the study examines its assumptions and conclusions, fostering scholarly dialogue between internal Islamic perspectives and Western approaches to Islamic studies.
