The Counter-Orientalist Critique A Critical Review of D. S. Margoliouth’s Edition of the Dīwān of Sibt Ibn al-Taʿāwīdhī
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article critically examines an orientalist study of Arabic literary heritage by analyzing the edition of the Dīwān of Sibt Ibn al-Taʿāwīdhī produced by the English orientalist Samuel Margoliouth. It seeks to identify instances of bias and prejudice in the treatment of Arabic poetry, which reflects important aspects of Arab cultural identity and Islamic heritage. The study aims to expose potential breaches of scholarly integrity, analyze the motives underlying subjective bias and the distortion of Arab history, and investigate the methods used to marginalize, exclude, or erase Arab literary heritage, particularly poetry. It also seeks to identify methodological shortcomings in the editorial process and draw lessons to help future editors avoid similar errors. Drawing on historical and psychological perspectives, the article adopts a descriptive-analytical approach to examine alleged prejudice against Arabic poetry in general and the poetry of Sibt Ibn al-Taʿāwīdhī in particular.
